ABB Enters India’s 25 kV AC Metro Segment

ABB has secured a major traction and control order from Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd. for the expansion of the Mumbai Metro, marking ABB’s first entry into India’s 25 kV AC metro segment.

The order covers a complete, integrated propulsion and Train Control and Management System (TCMS) solution for 40 six-car trainsets—18 allocated to Mumbai Metro Line 6 (Pink Line) and 22 to Line 5 (Orange Line). These corridors are designed to improve east–west and north–east connectivity across the Mumbai metropolitan region while reducing travel times and road congestion.

ABB’s scope of supply includes traction converters, auxiliary converters, traction motors, and TCMS software. The integrated architecture is designed to optimize energy efficiency, operational reliability, and lifecycle performance across high-capacity metro operations. Manufacturing will be executed in India, with traction converters produced in Bengaluru and traction motors manufactured in Vadodara, supported by local engineering, testing, and service teams.

The project builds on a strategic collaboration between ABB and Titagarh established in 2023, which focuses on technology localization and long-term cooperation on metro rail projects. The current order also предусматривает phased co-production of key traction components, strengthening domestic manufacturing capability.

By localizing production and deploying energy-efficient propulsion technologies, the project supports India’s “Make in India” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiatives, while contributing to a more resilient and self-reliant metro rolling stock ecosystem.
