Micron Launches Historic First Semiconductor Assembly and Test Site India

Micron Technology has inaugurated India’s first semiconductor assembly and test facility in Sanand, Gujarat, a strategic move that differentiates its global manufacturing capabilities from competitors by creating a more resilient and geographically diverse supply chain. While many semiconductor firms remain concentrated in traditional hubs, Micron’s $2.75 billion investment in India — developed in partnership with the Indian government—positions the company to better meet the surging global demand for memory and storage driven by artificial intelligence. This facility transforms advanced DRAM and NAND wafers into finished products, providing a critical link in a trusted, self-reliant semiconductor ecosystem that enhances Micron's ability to serve customers worldwide with greater agility.

Advanced Manufacturing Scale and Global Reach
The Sanand site features one of the world’s largest single-floor assembly and test cleanrooms, spanning over 500,000 square feet in its initial phase. This scale allows Micron to differentiate itself through high-volume output and operational efficiency. The facility has already achieved ISO 9001:2015 certification and commenced commercial production, delivering its first "made-in-India" memory modules to Dell Technologies. Production is expected to scale rapidly, reaching tens of millions of chips in 2026 and hundreds of millions by 2027. This expansion complements Micron’s planned advanced packaging capabilities in the United States, creating a unique dual-hemisphere manufacturing advantage that mitigates regional supply chain risks.

Technological Excellence and Sustainable Infrastructure
Beyond production capacity, the facility sets a new benchmark for sustainable semiconductor manufacturing. Designed to meet or exceed LEED Gold standards, the site incorporates advanced water-saving technologies to achieve zero liquid discharge. This commitment to environmental excellence serves as a competitive differentiator in an industry increasingly scrutinized for its resource consumption. By integrating these high standards with a focus on local talent development—through partnerships with leading Indian universities and STEM programs — Micron is securing a specialized workforce capable of maintaining its leadership in advanced manufacturing and AI-ready memory solutions.
