Coolbrook and ABB have entered the industrial delivery phase of their partnership to execute an industrial-scale deployment of Coolbrook’s RotoDynamic Heater™ (RDH™) technology. The system will be installed at Adani Cement’s Boyareddypalli Integrated Cement Plant in Andhra Pradesh, India, to electrify high-temperature process heat in cement manufacturing.

Context of the Cooperation
Cement production, particularly the calcination phase, relies heavily on fossil fuel combustion to achieve required high-temperature process heat. As climate frameworks tighten and renewable electricity capacity expands, industrial material producers require proven pathways to remove fossil fuel combustion from thermal operations.

Addressing these thermal and operational demands requires combining specialized process technology with large-scale industrial electrification and automation infrastructure. To resolve these technical requirements, Coolbrook and ABB established a long-term partnership spanning exploratory research and development, pilot testing, and commercial delivery.

Technical Solution and Responsibilities
The technical solution centers on Coolbrook’s proprietary RotoDynamic Heater™ (RDH™) technology, integrated with ABB’s industrial electrification and automation platform. Responsibilities are divided across the partners to align process mechanical systems with power distribution and control infrastructure:
  • Coolbrook provides the RDH™ process technology, which generates clean heat to dry alternative fuels and enhance their heating value.
  • ABB supplies the electrical equipment scope, providing drives, motors, an e-house, and electrical infrastructure integrated into the ABB Ability™ System 800xA® distributed control system (DCS).
At a system level, the RDH™ system electrifies high-temperature heat generation. The System 800xA® DCS manages control parameters to ensure safe and high-performance operations. By providing clean heat to dry alternative fuel sources, the system enables a higher proportion of renewable or waste alternatives in the energy mix, replacing traditional fossil fuels.

Deployment or Implementation
The technology is being deployed at Adani Cement’s Boyareddypalli Integrated Cement Plant located in Andhra Pradesh, India, marking a first-of-its-kind deployment of the system at industrial scale.

The project transitions the joint effort from laboratory research and testing into full-scale plant execution. Once operational, the integrated RDH™ system is expected to directly reduce approximately 60,000 tons of carbon emissions annually, with potential for further reductions as fuel mix ratios expand.
