The groundbreaking of Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited's (TPREL) 800 MW renewable energy project marks the expansion of the company's utility-scale renewable energy portfolio in Andhra Pradesh. The project combines solar, wind and battery energy storage technologies to support grid-connected renewable power generation and strengthen transmission infrastructure.

Renewable Energy Capacity Expansion
The project comprises 400 MW of solar capacity at Pattikonda in Kurnool district and 400 MW of wind capacity at Kanekallu in Ananthapuram district. TPREL is developing the project under the Andhra Pradesh Integrated Clean Energy (ICE) Policy, which promotes large-scale renewable energy investments and capacity addition within the state.

The development represents an investment of approximately ₹5,750 crore and requires around 3,462 acres of land, including about 2,700 acres for the solar installation and 760 acres for the wind project.

Integrated Renewable Energy Infrastructure
The project has secured 800 MW of Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) connectivity through the Ananthapuram II and Kurnool-4 CTUIL substations. Access to the national transmission network enables renewable electricity generated at both sites to be transmitted efficiently to the grid.

Of the total capacity, 200 MW will be developed as a Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) project for NTPC. This portion will incorporate a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) rated at 25 MW with 50 MWh of storage capacity to improve dispatchability and grid integration. The remaining 200 MW of solar capacity has been reserved for future allocation.

Project Development Responsibilities
TPREL is leading the overall project development and will develop the solar facilities and associated infrastructure. For the wind component, Suzlon will execute the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) scope, supplying and integrating the wind energy systems required for the 400 MW installation.

The combination of solar generation, wind generation and battery storage is intended to improve renewable energy availability while supporting system stability through complementary generation profiles.

Regional and Industrial Impact
Construction and operation of the project are expected to generate approximately 4,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities across development, construction and operational activities. The project will also provide annual land lease income for participating landowners.

By expanding renewable generation capacity and integrating energy storage with transmission infrastructure, the development contributes to Andhra Pradesh's renewable energy objectives while supporting India's target of increasing non-fossil fuel power generation capacity. For Tata Power, the project strengthens its renewable energy portfolio, which totals 17.7 GW, including projects under construction, and supports the company's long-term objective of achieving net zero emissions by 2045.
