Solar Power Deployment for Industrial Electronics and Infrastructure

Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited has commissioned a 100 MW group captive solar power installation in Kayathar, Tamil Nadu, to supply electrical energy directly to industrial manufacturing and infrastructure facilities. The cooperative framework provides dedicated renewable power generation for solar cell manufacturing, semiconductor production, and real estate operations.

Industrial Framework and Energy Allocation
The project addresses the demand for low-carbon digital infrastructure and high-volume industrial automation by routing utility-scale solar generation directly to three industrial entities. Power capacity is distributed according to distinct operational requirements:
  • 53.125 MW allocated to Tata Electronics Private Limited for semiconductor, precision engineering, and electronics manufacturing.
  • 40.625 MW allocated to TP Solar Limited for the production of photovoltaic cells and modules.
  • 6.25 MW allocated to Tata Realty And Infrastructure Limited for commercial and civil operations.
The joint arrangement uses a group captive model, enabling participants to secure dedicated generation capacity while sharing the capital and operational infrastructure of a single large-scale power plant.

Technical Architecture and Engineering Specifications
The plant incorporates 261,660 Mono PERC bifacial photovoltaic modules, which capture solar irradiation on both the front and rear surfaces to increase energy yield per unit area.

To maintain yield across uneven topography, the system integrates Flexible Terrain Compatible single-axis tracker technology. The trackers adjust panel orientation along the sun’s diurnal path independently across varied slopes, minimizing mechanical stress and reducing shading losses.

Grid Integration and Operational Output
The installation connects to the regional electrical grid via the Kayathar 400 kV Grid Substation. This high-voltage interconnection provides the necessary thermal rating and voltage regulation to handle variable generation.

The installation is engineered for the following operational metrics:
  • Nameplate capacity: 100 MW
  • Annual generation: 240.63 million kilowatt-hours (MUs)
  • Annual emission reduction: Approximately 150,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide
Power evacuation through the 400 kV substation maintains supply reliability for the downstream precision manufacturing processes of the participating facilities.
