Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) commissioned a 72.5 MW captive solar power facility in Kalasar, Bikaner, Rajasthan, specifically developed for Tata Steel Limited. The system directly integrates renewable generation capacity into heavy industrial operations to support the decarbonization of steel manufacturing.
Industrial Challenge and Partnership Framework
Steel manufacturing processes are energy-intensive and require reliable, high-volume electrical power. Transitioning primary industrial facilities away from fossil-fuel reliance requires dedicated power generation infrastructure capable of meeting high load demands while reducing carbon intensity. To execute this transition, Tata Steel partnered with TPREL to deploy captive renewable assets tailored to industrial operating parameters.
Technical Architecture and Equipment Deployment
The 72.5 MW installation incorporates 171,360 photovoltaic modules sourced from module manufacturer TP Solar Limited. The solar array is configured as a dedicated captive generating plant, delivering electricity directly to industrial consumers under captive consumption regulations.
The installation is engineered to generate 166 million units (MUs) of electricity annually. Through direct displacement of grid electricity derived from conventional generation sources, the facility is designed to offset 118,856 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions on an annual basis.
Operational Implementation and Capacity Integration
The installation at Kalasar represents an addition to regional digital infrastructure and industrial energy grids, connecting utility-scale solar generation with end-use manufacturing processes. Following the commissioning of this captive unit, TPREL maintains a total renewable utility portfolio of 12.3 GW.
Of this total capacity:
- 7 GW is operational, comprising 5.7 GW of solar assets and 1.3 GW of wind installations.
- 5.3 GW is in development phases, divided between 2.2 GW of solar and 3.1 GW of wind assets scheduled for phased integration over 6 to 24 months.
The deployment demonstrates the application of dedicated, multi-megawatt renewable generation arrays within the metals and heavy manufacturing sectors to meet industrial energy requirements.
