The initiative is designed to enhance first- and last-mile connectivity within a 500-metre radius of all stations along the Chennai Metro's operational Blue and Green lines. By optimizing multi-modal integration, the project seeks to bridge gaps between the metro network and other public transport options, including buses, suburban rail networks, and intermediate paratransit services like auto-rickshaws and taxis.
Key interventions planned under the consultancy include:
- Pedestrian Infrastructure: Upgrading sidewalks, constructing shaded walkways, and building pedestrian bridges for safer station access.
- Traffic and Transit Reorganisation: Restructuring parking zones, redesigning vehicle drop-off areas, and relocating bus bays closer to station entrances.
- High-Priority Hubs: Directing focused redesigns for major high-traffic interchanges such as Chennai Central, Airport, Guindy, Thousand Lights, Thirumangalam, and Alandur.
Strategic Partnership and Long-Term Commitment
This contract builds upon SYSTRA’s decade-long engineering footprint in Chennai’s transit landscape. Having previously acted as a detailed design consultant for Phase 1 extensions, Phase 2 corridors, and updating the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) for the Chennai Metropolitan Area, SYSTRA continues to reinforce public transport efficiency and sustainable urban mobility in the region.
Leadership Perspective
“We are proud to advance, alongside CMRL, a vision that strengthens first- and last-mile connectivity and promotes the use of sustainable public transport. This project highlights our continued commitment to delivering integrated urban mobility solutions that meet the needs of Chennai’s residents,” said Hari Somalraju, Managing Director of SYSTRA India.
