The transformer underwent Dynamic Short Circuit, Impulse and Temperature Rise Tests as part of the type-testing programme. These tests assess the transformer's ability to withstand short-circuit forces, electrical transients and thermal operating conditions.

The five-winding configuration is intended for inverter-based power systems, where transformers provide the electrical interface between power conversion equipment and the grid or other electrical infrastructure. Such transformers must accommodate operating conditions associated with power electronic converters and renewable generation systems.

Applications across renewable energy and BESS
Inverter Duty Transformers are used in renewable energy installations to connect inverter-based generation and storage systems to electrical networks. Solar photovoltaic plants, wind power installations and BESS facilities rely on power electronic converters to regulate and transfer electrical energy, making transformer design an important part of the overall grid-interface system.

Waaree Transpower, a subsidiary of Waaree Energies Ltd., has also received orders for more than 120 Inverter Duty Transformers with ratings ranging from 11 MVA to 20 MVA for solar, wind and BESS applications.

Engineering and manufacturing implications
The type-testing results provide validation for the tested transformer design under specified electrical, mechanical and thermal conditions. For large renewable and storage projects, this type of validation can support engineering qualification and equipment selection during project development.

The combination of type testing and orders across multiple transformer ratings indicates that the company is expanding its transformer offering for inverter-based power infrastructure. The applications require equipment capable of operating within electrical systems where power conversion equipment, grid interconnection requirements and thermal loading must be considered together.

Mr. Viren Doshi, Director, Waaree, said: “The successful type testing of our 17.6 MVA five-winding Inverter Duty Transformer is an important validation of our engineering and manufacturing capabilities. The strong order traction, with more than 120 IDTs ordered by leading customers, further demonstrates the confidence that the market is placing in our solutions. As renewable generation and energy storage continue to scale, we are focused on developing reliable and technically advanced electrical infrastructure that can support this transition.”
